Electrical Engineering
Electrical engineering is the study of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism. In electrical engineering there are again many sub specialties that are considered separate disciplines.
Power engineering is one discipline that focuses on the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. They do this by using devices such as transformers, electric generators, electric motors and power electronics which are connected normally to a national grid. Power engineers may work on the design and maintenance of the power grid as well as the power systems that connect to it.
Electronic engineering involves the design and testing of electronic circuits that are used as components such as resistors, diodes, inductors and transistors which are created and assembled to perform a particular functionality. Microelectronics engineering is related to electronic engineering however it deals with components that are usually at a microscopic level. The field of microelectronics involves a significant amount of chemistry and material science and requires the electronic engineer working in the field to have a very good working knowledge of the effects of quantum mechanics.
In today’s world of fast communication the field of telecommunication engineering has grown quickly. This involves the transmission of information across a channel such as a cable, optical fiber or even free space. These engineers must choose the form of modulation against cost and performance to achieve the best result. Other fields in the Electrical engineering sub divisions include Instrumental engineering, control engineering, signal processing and computers.
