Civil Engineering
Civil engineering is a field which specializes with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and natural built environment. It also has many sub-disciplines within that general category. Civil engineers work closely with surveyors on projects. General civil engineering is also referred to as site engineering and typically apply the principles of geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, environmental engineering, transportation engineering and construction engineering to residential, commercial, industrial and public works projects of all sizes and levels of construction.
Another field of engineering within the civil engineering category is Construction engineering. Construction engineering involves the planning of the construction of structures such as bridges, motorways, airports, railroads, buildings and dams. A construction engineer must look at mathematics, science and engineering used to analyze problems and design a construction process. A construction engineering job entails many activities including decision making, computer interaction, communication and documentation, information collecting, estimating and analyzing. Construction Engineers must also maintain project control of labor and equipment for safety, to ensure the project is on schedule and monitor quality control. When a problem occurs it is the construction engineer who will create and enact a solution
Environmental engineering is also under the category of civil engineering and deals with the treatment of chemical and biological waste. They usually work in fields relating to pollutant transport, waste water, air pollution and hazardous waste management. Geotechnical engineering works with the rock and soil that civil engineering systems support applying geology, material science, mechanics and hydraulics to ensure that foundations and retaining walls are suitable for the structures they are to maintain. Other areas of Civil engineering include hydraulic engineering, materials science, structural engineering, surveying, wind engineering, geographic information systems and transportation so indeed is a highly diverse field of expertise.
