Engineering Overview
The idea and premise of engineering has existed since ancient times when tools and devices were created to aid man in and process. Even this far back the simple premise of engineering was the same in that man would exploit basic mechanical principles to develop useful tools and objects. Today engineering is defined as the discipline and profession of applying scientific knowledge, experience and manipulating natural laws and resource’s to design and implement machines, devices, systems, materials and processes that met with an objective within specific criteria.
The general term for an individual working in the field of engineering is know as an engineer but, due to the many different fields that engineering now encompasses, there are now more specific titles such as a Professional engineer, Chartered engineer or Incorporated engineer dependent on the specific discipline they specialize in.
In engineering there is the application of physics and mathematics to find solutions or improve current designs. The most crucial aspect in engineering is to identify the constraints of a design and to understand and modify a solution to reach maximum efficiency. These constraints in engineering may include physical, resources available, imaginative and technical limitations, budget, future modifications, productivity and safety. By understanding and appreciating all these factors in engineering ensures that the most appropriate system or object is designed for the purpose it is to serve.
